In this section you will find current news and trends that impact people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Although these items are not necessarily sponsored by AVSP, keeping abreast of the ever-changing service environment is essential to successfully meeting the needs of our participants.

Families, friends and other service providers may also find these items of interest.

The Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Council (SIDDC) is our local advocacy group.
 They provide information and resources to our participants and their families. The next meeting is scheduled for January 17 2020. All meetings are held at the Elizabeth Connelly Resource Center and are from 9:30am - 11:30am.  More information can be obtained by contacting the Council office at (718) 983-5276. 

The Staten Island Office of Parent-to-Parent of New York State provides a variety of support for family members of individuals with disabilities. They have a Yahoo e-group where information is disseminated and shared on local resources, events and other pertinent issues.

YAI Network offers "Project Grow," A seven week parent - training program that focuses on positive behavior management. You can join if you are a primary caretaker or if you have a child with a documented intellectual and developmental disability and live on Staten Island. For more information please call 212-273-6259.
